Open Door Policy

You can always leave, no questions asked

What Is It?

The Open Door Policy is a simple but powerful safety tool: any player can leave the game at any time, for any reason, without needing to explain or justify themselves.

This might mean stepping away for a few minutes to collect yourself, leaving early for the session, or even leaving the campaign entirely. The Open Door Policy affirms that your wellbeing comes first, and that no game is worth compromising your mental health.

Having an explicit Open Door Policy removes the social pressure that can make people feel "trapped" at a table. Even if you've never needed to use it, knowing the door is open can make difficult content easier to engage with.

How It Works

  1. 1At the start of the game, the GM explicitly states the Open Door Policy.
  2. 2If you need to step away, you simply do so. No explanation needed.
  3. 3The group continues play or takes a break, depending on circumstances.
  4. 4If you're comfortable sharing, you can let the GM know privately what triggered your exit.

When to Use It

  • When you need a mental health break
  • When content becomes too intense or triggering
  • When you're not enjoying the session for any reason
  • When personal circumstances require your attention
